RE: How do you feel: campgrounds that require a "newer" rig?
One of the nicest couple I ever met looked to be in their 80s, and they were pulling an early 60s canned ham trailer with a late 70s model Mercury sedan. That trailer may have been a 13 footer. The old fella had painted it white, with a brush-and the old girl had sewn curtains, the bedspread, and the upholstery of the sofabed with his discarded overalls. It was what they could afford,as they were retired farmers. It was very charming to see, and they were good as gold. We had another fellow come in with a Prevost, he was snotty and rude to everyone, sat outside all hours with his luggage compartment open watching tv at full blast. He had all his blinds open and lights on so we all could see the interior of his rig. Looked like the inside of a Vegas cathouse-all it needed was a stripper pole! CG owners have the right to restrict whom they rent to, I just wish they'd judge everyone on an individual basis.
RE: Convenience Food
The park I live in is in a rural area with only a lousy IGA grocery-if you want ground turkey or swiss cheese, you're in trouble. The closest "real" grocery is 30+ miles away. Every other week, the Schwann's truck rolls through. They carry very good food, and most can be microwaved or baked in a toaster oven. The prices might look high, but when you figure the number of servings, and then the cost of gas to make a 60 mile round trip, hte prices look very reasonable. I do cook for myself, but sometimes it's easier to just nuke something! I'd look online and see if Schwann's services your area and get a catalog..
RE: Do we stay or do we go??? Gustav :(
I would remind folks that Dennis didn't hit the panhandle that hard, and Katrina was just another rainy day. BUT! Dennis had a storm surge that started in south Florida and it rode all the way up the west coast of Florida, crashed into St Marks (inundating it) and then the surge headed west. Here in Carrabelle (where Fay made her 4th landfall) the storm surge of Dennis washed 12 feet of water over the park I'm in at the moment. Thank goodness the authorities had issued mandatory evacuations! There's always that possibility occuring again. I may leave on my own, especially since Hanna is out there now, I certainly wouldn't drive down. Carrabelle is just outside the cone, but we have lots of flooded roads around us now,and even if Gustav goes to Nola, we will still get lots more rain, and some storm surge. JMHO
RE: Operating an awning
Doug, to be honest, you should put it out once in a while. Moisture needs to be released otherwise the vinyl (or cloth) will just end up a moldy, deteriorated mess.
Joe In addition, the constant UV exposure in one place on the awning will break down the fabric eventually, assuming you have the conventional vinyl coated fabric awning. If you have one of the fancy Sunbrella fabric awnings, they aren't sensitive to UV, but will still mold and mildew. There's all good advice here on how to open an awning, take the plunge, there's really nothing to it!
RE: On the move.
And then there is the issue of trying to remember to turn off the LP while refueling the coach, as having the ignitor kick on the lp in an atmosphere of gasoline fumes isn't very safe ;-) BOOM! In running to escape Hurricane Dennis, I ran the generator five days straight, no problems. I did have to hoof it down the block from the shopping center I was parked at with a gas can once though! Now I'm sure to park with a full tank.
RE: It still hurts a year later
Nothing wrong with grieving, a year is still soon. I carry my little Runt's ashes with me in my mh, and I fear the day I lose my Bobby or Moon. I lost a collie I had as a child over 40 years ago, and I STILL can't say more than a few words about him without getting weepy. I must add here that I am a full blown cat-person, so my dear old boy Nomad was very special. The thing that helped me best, was to go to the shelter, and give another needy pet a home-it was good for everyone involved, and in a small way paying back for the privilege of having my pets in my life. Good luck, do what you have to do, and don't let anyone tell you your "crazy" or "stupid"..I'll add you to my prayers tonight.
RE: Did Fay damage your RV?
Are you all ready for Gustav? Here we go again! Might be tough to run this time-I stayed put for Fay, but if Gustav heads this way, Im' going to try to leave. Tallahassee and the surrounding area here currently have lots of flooded out roads, it may be hard to find an escape route-several rivers aren't supposed to crest til tomorrow. "That's the price you pay for living in paradise" ;-)
RE: What Are You Doing in My Campsite? - Long Post
I have to wonder something about the "rude" people we've been discussing here. The last ten years (or more) has seen an explosion of new campers. Whether they are in tents, PUPs, TTs, or Class "A"s, so many people I've encountered are new to the hobby. Lots of them suddenly decided one to day that it might be a cool idea get an RV or a tent and go camping.
Could it be that a lack of experience and/or understanding of "camping etiquette" is at the root of the problem. I wonder, if the family that rode thier bikes through the site while others were having dinner, if asked, were they on one of thier first trips? My own experience indicates to me that even when proper etiquette is pointed out in a nice way, folks become belligerent and defensive. Taken further, these same people would likely not cut through your yard at the stix and brix, most folks don't so why would they do it in a campground? I don't know the answer, because they will get drunk, beat their wife, play the stereo outside under their awning all night, and generally behave in a way they would not in their home neighborhoods either. I will say that it appears to me to be mostly weekend campers and not rvers behaving this way.
RE: Fisheating Creek CG Flooded???
They did have a mandatory evacuation-and all the rain that has fallen north of here is starting to come down-river. The local news is saying a week til thinga approximate normal again-and that's assuming Gustav doesn't pay us a visit!
RE: fulltiming in a class c
I downsized from a 34' class A to a 29" B+, so that I could get into smaller campgrounds and have an easier time boondocking. I also feel more confident in my abilities on mountain roads, and in heavy traffic. I do pull a toad, it's nice to not have to break camp to attend festivals, or go grocery shopping, or taking the furkids to the vet...I do have to watch the speed in the B though, the V10 pulls like a locomotive. My class A struggled to pull anything. My A had no slides, my B+ has three. I do miss the A's storage though. Can't have everything I guess.
RE: Golf carts!?
If only there were some kind of apparatus that could convert human energy input into quiet and efficient wheeled locomotion for those that feel walking is too burdensome or slow ... Yeah really! Seriously folks, if it's too far to walk, ride a bicycle!! Lose some of that tonnage you're dragging around!
RE: What do you pack where?
This is a great topic. We just went from a 39' 5th Wheel to a 2004 29' Winnie, so storage has really been an issue. We just got back from our "maiden voyage". I LOVE THE WINNIE. I followed much of the advise on this forum as to where to pack, but one thing I have to ask.
What do you do about a floor sweeper. I put the broom in the shower but I need some type of carpet sweeper. Any ideas ?
Thanks for all the good hints. This is my first post so please forgive me if I don't do it correctly I have two cats, both of them are black and I have putty colored carpet. I bought a Dust Buster "Retriever" at Wally's and it does a fantastic job. It does mean however, that I have to get on my hands and knees to get the full benefit on the carpet. Upside is, it really does get all the cat hair and beach sand! I keep it in one of the clothes closets..
RE: Our cat is eating like a pig, why?
We'll keep her in our prayers here-just as an aside, I switched to an organic sourced in Illinois cat food right after the China thing, though my cat's food wasn't included in the recall. It's expensive, but the quality is there-Cat Fancy gave it their highest rating as well. It's called Evanger's and comes in several flavors, dog food also. I might be a bit "enthusuastic" about my 2 cats, they only drink distilled water, my effort to keep their plumbing free. All the above has a happy side effect of a nicer litterbox too!
RE: liver enzymes in cat
He's a handsome guy! My Bobby is solid black-I think there is something extra special about the black ones..maybe because they have had a reputation for bad luck or whatever. Bobby has been a blessing to me :-)
RE: 1st Walmart stay, had a bad experience!
I have had the panhandler at the gas pump thing happen to me more than once in Atlanta and some of it's suburbs...particularly at Quik Trip stations. Don't know why they seem to hang out there.
RE: Changing a Family Traditon
Except for my cats, I have no family left, so I always bake a ham and do the veggies, and dinner rolls, the "kids" get a can of people tuna, and I sit down and watch "Alice's Restaurant", wash dishes and retire early after a blackberry brandy. AHHHHHH!
RE: Did Fay damage your RV?
Okay, I live in Carrabelle, where Fay made landfall #4. Very strange, slept through that part. She made up for her quiet entrance by raising caine all day! I had to put my dinette slide in, the wind-driven sideways rain was coming in under the slide. Wet carpet, yuck! We were exceptionally blessed, as we are right on the Gulf. High tide was just a teensy bit higher than normal, we didn't lose any utilities. Watch out Pensacola, you're next!
